What is Yoga?
Published by Yatharth July 17th, 2006 in Yoga
The word Yoga originates from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means ‘to unite’ and is commonly translated as ‘union’ or ‘integration’. Yoga is the union and integration of every aspect of a human being, from the innermost to the external. According to Yoga experts, the union referred to by the name is that of the individual soul with the Supreme. This may be understood as union with the Supreme by integration of body, mind, and soul. Thus, in essence, one who attempts Yoga may be referred to as a yogi, or in Sanskrit, a yogin (male) or yogini (female).
Yoga has both a philosophical and a practical dimension. The philosophy of Yoga deals with the nature of the individual soul and the Supreme, and how the two are related. The practice of Yoga, on the other hand, is any activity that leads or brings the practitioner closer to this mystical union - a state called self-realization or moksha.
Over thousands of years, special practical Yoga techniques have been developed by experts in Yoga. These Yoga techniques cover a broad range, encompassing physical, mental, and spiritual activities. Traditionally, they have been classified into four categories or paths: the path of meditation and asana (Raja Yoga), the path of devotion (Bhakti Yoga), the path of selfless service to the Divine (Karma Yoga), and the path of intellectual analysis or the discrimination of truth and reality (Jnana Yoga).
Anyone can practice Yoga. You don’t need any special equipment, clothing, or lessons; all you need is the will to pursue a healthier and happier lifestyle. The Yoga Postures and Asanas exercise every part of your body. The stretching involved helps in toning your muscles and joints, including your spine and your entire skeletal system. Yoga not only facilitates in improving your body but also aids in keeping your glands, nerves and your other internal organs in radiant health. By releasing physical and mental tension, you will liberate vast resources of energy. The Yogic Breathing Exercises known as pranayama revitalize the body and help control the mind, leaving you calm and refreshed - combine this with the practice of positive thinking and meditation, and the result will be increased clarity, mental power and concentration.
